The Creative Coalition Applauds The Historical Role Of The Arts In the U.S. Economy, Though More Work Is Needed For A Full Economic Recovery
WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 17, 2023) – Today, The Creative Coalition applauded the release of new data by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), which demonstrates the critical role that arts play in the American economy.
The data released today established that the overall arts economy in 2021 represented 4.4 percent of GDP, over $1.0 trillion in the U.S. economy. This amount is a new record for the economic impact the arts have on the economy.
President of The Creative Coalition, Tim Daly, added, “The information released today is very positive but, most importantly, it reveals that we still have much work to do. The number of workers employed by performing arts-related industries is still below 2019 levels. We must keep advocating for #TheRightToBearArts, so a complete recovery of the arts economy happens sooner rather than later.”
“The new data continues to illustrate what we always have known – the arts are a source of innovation and creativity that fuel our country’s economy,” said Robin Bronk, CEO of The Creative Coalition. “However, today’s numbers show that many parts of the arts economy are still recovering from the pandemic, including work for independent writers, artists, and performers. The continued robust funding for the National Endowment for the Arts is necessary to ensure that the entire arts economy recovers from the devastating impact of the COVID pandemic.”
