The Last Thing America Needs Is Government Bureaucrats Hogging The Remote Control

NEW YORK, NY (April 27, 2007) – Pressure on Congress by the Federal Communications Commission to control violence on television amounts to government censorship and a violation of First Amendment rights. An FCC report released this week urged Congress to craft a law barring the broadcast of violent programming during hours when children may be watching.

“We fundamentally disagree with the FCC’s notion that Congress must cleanup the airwaves. The FCC suggests that lawmakers could become Big Brother, and that’s a scary reality,” said Robin Bronk, Executive Director of The Creative Coalition. “If I wanted the government to tell me what to watch, I’d move to China or Cuba. The FCC seems to have forgotten that the United States of America was founded on the principles of free speech and open expression.”

“This is the first generation of children bombarded with hundreds of television channels and nearly unlimited amounts of online content, some of which is child-friendly and some decidedly inappropriate. There is no doubt that we all need to be vigilant about exposing our children to violent content, but there are better ways than censorship, which is un-America.”
