THE CREATIVE COALITION TO AWARD UP TO $150,000 TO FILMMAKERS IN LATEST ‘SPOTLIGHT INITIATIVE’ TO BRING ATTENTION TO THE UNTOLD STORY OF OBESITY

JURY OF INDIE FILM LEADERS AND CREATIVES WILL PICK
WINNING SHORT FILM TREATMENTS

June 16, 2020 (NEW YORK, NY) – The Creative Coalition announces today that the organization will award up to $150,000 in grants to three winning filmmakers selected to produce short films (up to 40 minutes) about the untold story of obesity. Weight impacts our health and this chronic disease affects individuals of all ages and backgrounds, their families and communities. It’s time to tell this story. Interested filmmakers can find submission information and treatment guidelines here (http://thecreativecoalition.org/obesity).

This grant-making program, made possible under The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative, is part of a multi-platform project to showcase the efficacy of the arts in bringing issues of social welfare importance to the forefront of the national agenda. The theme of this year’s competition is, “The Untold Story of Obesity in America.”

Winning filmmakers will each receive a grant from The Creative Coalition to produce a short film addressing the theme. Grants will be given to three filmmakers who display originality and exceptional vision. Grant amounts will vary from $10,000 to $50,000 depending on the scale and merit of each project. Leaders from the television and film arenas, as well as independent topic experts, will serve as jurists. The grants are made possible thanks to the support of Novo Nordisk Inc.

“At a time when many filmmakers are suffering and out of work due to coronavirus, The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative will provide vital resources to three film creators while helping to end the stigma around obesity,” said The Creative Coalition CEO Robin Bronk. “The power of the arts has never been clearer, and The Creative Coalition is more determined than ever to use the arts to change the conversation, challenge misconceptions, and increase critical understanding that will help improve people’s lives and the health of our communities.”

The Spotlight Initiative is a prestigious program in the independent film arena. For over a decade, The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative Honors have been bestowed during the Sundance, Cannes, and Toronto Film Festivals.
