The Creative Coalition Applauds Supreme Court For Upholding Campaign Finance Limits
Washington, DC (June 27, 2001): Today, The Creative Coalition praised the recent 5 to 4 United States Supreme Court decision upholding limits on how much money political parties can spend in coordination with candidates for federal office.
In a statement issued today, William Baldwin, actor and president of The Creative Coalition, said:
The Creative Coalition applauds the Supreme Court’s decision that reasonable limitations on coordinated campaign expenditures do not violate the First Amendment. We maintain that the First Amendment is no impediment to enacting reasonable limitations on campaign contributions to avoid real or perceived corruption. The Court’s ruling shows that a majority of justices agree with this position, increasing the likelihood that in any future Court review a soft money ban will similarly be found constitutional. This should embolden House members as they attempt to enact such a ban. We urge the House to join the Senate and speed passage of H.R.380 so that meaningful reform can soon be presented to the President for his signature.
