Spotlight Initiative Film Selected to Commemorate Worldwide Celebration of International Women’s Day

QVC Donates “14 WOMEN” DVDs to Girl Scouts of the USA

Washington, DC. (March 10, 2009) –  For the 2009 Celebration of International Women’s Day, QVC has teamed with The Creative Coalition and Screen Media’s Spotlight Initiative project, and has selected the documentary film, 14 Women, to distribute to the Girl Scouts of the USA.  QVC will present 25,000 14 Women DVDs to the Girl Scouts of the USA.

14 Women, narrated by Annette Bening, profiles the 14 female Senators of the 109th Congress.  Viewing 14 Women, and participating in activities that focus on self-esteem, will help girls become 21st century leaders who make the world a better place, a key focus of the Girl Scout organization’s new curriculum.  “This generous donation from QVC comes just as our new research shows that girls have unprecedented interest in civic participation and more awareness that they can overcome the obstacles women face,” said Laurie Westley, Girl Scouts of the USA Senior Vice President for Public Policy, Advocacy and the Research Institute.  “14 Women gives us an inspiring and timely new way to help fulfill the leadership mission that has sustained Girl Scouting for 97 years.”

The Spotlight Initiative is a joint venture between The Creative Coalition and Screen Media Films that utilizes the platform of independent film to promote messages of social importance.  Robin Bronk, Executive Director of The Creative Coalition said, “This project is a terrific example of how we all can work together to invest time and resources to serve the next generation of America’s leaders.  It is a ‘perfect storm’ of Corporate America and the entertainment industry, partnering with nonprofit to foster a better future.”

President of Screen Media Films Robert Baruc added, “Independent film has always been a platform for messages that inspire.  The Spotlight Initiative supports films that are not only great entertainment, but also have empowering storylines intrinsic to the nation’s social welfare agenda.”
