The Creative Coalition Salutes Town of Ossining for Embracing #RightToBearArts
New York, NY (April 10, 2017) — The Creative Coalition, the national nonprofit, nonpartisan charity of the arts and entertainment industry, salutes Ossining, New York for being the first municipality in the United States to enact the #RightToBearArts Resolution. Ossining brought national politics to a local level when it strongly opposed President Trump’s proposed budget calling for the elimination of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Board of Trustees approved the #RightToBearArts Resolution which calls on Congress to reject these draconian budget cuts.
Begun by the national nonpartisan, nonprofit charity, The Creative Coalition, The Right To Bear Arts™ campaign raises public awareness about and encourages civic activism in favor of maintaining federal funding for the creative arts, including through the National Endowment for the Arts. Too often, stripping arts funding from the federal budget is proposed as a quick and easy way to reduce government spending, but this is bad public policy. Funding for the arts represents a miniscule yet worthwhile percentage of the Federal budget. Americans of all political views are united by their love for the arts, whether in their cinemas, on their televisions, or through the music they enjoy. No government that weakens the arts can strengthen America.
Actor and President of The Creative Coalition Tim Daly said, “We congratulate Ossining for recognizing that the Federal elimination of the National Endowment for the Arts will have a devastating effect on their residents – as well as the entire citizenry of the United States because it will greatly reduce their to access the arts.”

Ossining Board of Trustee Rika Levin said, “Ossining has a vibrant art community and many of our veterans, seniors, and teens participate in the arts for therapy, social inclusion and education. The Board of Trustees of the Village of Ossining strongly opposes this extreme and narrow-sighted proposal by the President and calls on every municipality across the country to join in this #RightToBearArts movement —- where the lives of their constituents are directly impacted.”
The Board of Ossining will forward copies of the resolution (which can be found on the Village website at www.villageofOssining.org ), to their Congressional elected officials — Congresswoman Nita Lowey, Senator Charles Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
